I recently spent a weekend in the hospital for a series of unexplained fainting spells. There is a history of heart issues in my family and directly my father passed after experiencing a series of “unexplained” fainting spells. Upon hearing this the admitting doctor did his job and admitted. Luckily, or unluckily, they found nothing out of the ordinary and called it a vasovagal syncope. This is actually a term (look it up) that means a fainting spell with no sign of heart disease. They did all of the head, heart and some lung tests to determine that they couldn’t find anything wrong. So, to all of you who are on the edge of your seats worried about my health… just breathe. I have to believe that I will be fine… or I won’t. I have done what I can do.
This is the theme of my rant today. Live right here right now. I myself have spent much of my life worrying about things I can not affect. The past and the future are just that… not the present! The present is the only time that we have a direct impact on. Try changing the past. And, the future will be impacted by so many factors trhat you can not control right here right now… stick to what you do have control over. Several years ago when I turned fifty, I had a huge epiphany. I realized that another day spent in anger, sadness or discontent was one day, one moment too many. Whatever your feeling about life after or not… we are here in this time, in this body, facing these choices just once. To spend any extra time indulging in wishing things were different, wanting things to be as you like not as they are, is ridiculous! The best way to avoid this is to be focussed on what is right in front of you… right here right now! To worry about things you can not directly affect is absurd. All we have absolute control over is our response to what the universe throws at us right here right now. Once I finally found these things to be true in my life I found that the world I live in is a much more beautiful, blissful and acceptable world. Believe me or not this is what I found.
Down to earth a little more… Now is the time when trees and and other fruit producing plants around Los Angeles start to blossom and produce. There is a website, in case you don’t know, called fallenfruit.com that maps many areas in this city (plus others around the world) where fruit trees are growing in abundance. The law on this is apparently fairly clear but rarely enforced. There is a site called fallenfruit.org that has all of the info that you might need. the link to their current maps is http://www.fallenfruit.org/index.php/media/maps/
Let’s talk art for a second. MOCA, headed up by Jeffrey Deitch, is currently showing the most extensive and documented exhibit featuring street art and graffiti from all over the world. The exhibit starts with the work of some of the names that you may, or may not, know from New York in the 70’s and 80’s, Cholo writers from Los Angeles goin back 30 years or so, and goes up to some of the biggest contemporary names from all over the world. Check it out “Art in the Streets” at MOCA Geffen Contemporary.
Last but not least there is a really cool open in Culver City this weekend at LeBasse Projects. This also features some street artists but a newer generation of expression and personalities. I have seen some of the work and some of it is spectacular. It is this Saturday night and I will be there diiging all my peeps. If you go there make sure you don’t miss the last Saturday night for the D*face show at the Corey Helford Gallery. This show has received notice in everything from the New York Magazine to the LA Weekly. WWD called D*face “one of the most celebrated and successful contemporary urban artists”. check it out it looks great.
