Sept. 5, 2007 (KABC-TV) (KABC) — You know that eating more produce and vegetables can help keep you fit. You can always find what you’re looking for if you search at the grocery store or if you go the Farmers Market. But wouldn’t it be great if you could get what you need without ever leaving home? Some local companies are making that happen.
Buying produce at the grocery store makes for easy one-stop shopping, but you can’t always guess freshness. The Farmers Market is fun, but not always convenient. So what’s the solution? How about produce delivered to your doorstep? There are about four produce delivery services in the Los Angeles area. One of them is Rick Segal’s L.O.V.E. Delivery.
“I am one of the smaller ones, but I’m the longest-running organic delivery service in Los Angeles,” said Segal.
Los Angeles Organic Vegetable Express (L.O.V.E.) is not the largest, but according to Segal one of the most accommodating.
“So you can pretty much put whatever you’d like into your boxes,” said Segal. “Whatever’s available.”
That could be two-thirds fruit, two-thirds veggie, all fruit, or all veggie — you decide by weekly e-mail for delivery the next week.
A small box feeds one-to-two people for a week for $28.50, while a large box should satisfy a family of four for $42.
Segal says his service is less expensive than organic grocers and farmers markets, unless you’re prone to haggling with the farmer near the end of market day.
Other economical options are community co-ops, or U-pick farms, where consumers go directly to the farm to pick and buy produce.
Both keep costs down, but may lack variety.
“But if you buy shares in one farm, and lettuce is producing that week, sometimes you walk home with a lot of lettuce that day,” said Segal.
Grocery stores deliver as well, but charge a service fee and don’t often offer the variety of organics of the produce-only services.
With about 1,200 programs nationwide and growing, many are drawn to the taste and quality of locally-grown food while enjoying saving time, energy, and the price of gas.
